SURVEYOR MINI-GAME A. WALKTHROUGH B. THE FILES C. THE SPIRITS D. OTHER ITEMS III. HIDE ‘N SEEK A. WALKTHROUGH B. THE SPIRITS IV. CREDITS/CONTACT ************************* I. SIDEQUESTS? ************************* Sidequests (in general) are spirits and items (and memos and files, etc) that you get by triggering it—not just by playing normally through the game. Personally, I didn’t complete these until I was going back to finish my spirit list, but I assume it would be much easier to just do it the first time through. There are two of them in this game, the Surveyor mini-game with Masumi (In the 2nd Night) and a Hide and Seek mini-game with the children in the Osaka House after you get the crest (during the 8th Night). Both will be explained below in excruciating detail so you won’t miss anything =) The Surveyor mini-game is not something that is unique to the XBOX version of Fatal Frame. It’s actually in both and is featured in many guides, but it’s something that I personally feel requires extra attention, as it is something that many people may miss unless they’re reading an excellent walkthrough. You should also know, that by doing this mini-game, you are able to find several extra ghosts which wouldn’t typically appear, which will help fill your spirit list should you get stuck. The second sidequest in the game is Hide and Seek game with the little kids in the Osaka House. This is another time when there are several ghosts you get and an extra battle which will help you to fill up your spirit list. This is one where I suggest that each time you play through, you complete this mini-game so that you do not need to get all of the ghosts each time, as they are very quick and sometimes appear in groups, which make them even harder to catch. ************************* II. SURVEYOR MINI-GAME ************************* A. WALKTHROUGH ------------------------- CHAPTER 2: TWIN SHRINE MAIDENS [Village Reports 1-4, First Pages] The official trigger for the mini-game is during this second night. At some point during the night, enter the Back Room. If you walk out onto the deck, you should be able to pick up a series of Village Reports [1-4], but only the first page of each. They tell you where to go to find the additional pages. At this time you will also be able to take a photo of Miyako Sudo (Atrium Woman). [Village Report 2, Additional Pages] Outside of the Tsuchihara House, you should be able to find a well. If you check around it, you will find the remaining pages of Village Report 2. At this time, you will also be able to take a photo of Well Checker. [Village Report 4, Additional Pages] Trek all the way up to Misono Hill near the save point. You’ll want to find the Shinto Gate you first entered the Village through. Check around it to find the remaining pages of Village Report 4. Walk away slowly and you will also be able to catch a shot of Gate Checker. [Village Report 1] Go to the Fork in the Road (one side leads to the Kureha Shrine, the other leads to the Old Tree). On the left side of the path which leads to the shrine, you should be able to spot a small red pinwheel spinning. Check it to find Village Report 1. When you move away from this point, you will also be able to take a shot of Statue Checker. [Village Report 3] Head up the stairs to the Kureha Shrine and examine the Shrine gate. You’ll receive Village Report 3. Again, if you walk away slowly, you will be able to capture Man at Shrine. [Village Report 5] This is a special report which you will find with the last of the other 4 Village Reports you find. Having all 5 of these Village Reports will make additional ghosts appear which you must also do specific things with in order to keep the “mini game” moving along. ---------- CHAPTER 4: THE FORBIDDEN RITUAL [Exhausted Man] Head to the Great Hall where the Kusabi was during the last Chapter. Make your way into the storeroom, and be sure to take a photo of ‘Exhausted Man’. Also, when he has disappeared, be sure to collect the Bloody Ring that he left and exit the room. ---------- CHAPTER 5: THE SACRIFICE [Unrest in Piece] Head to the 1F Back Room in the Osaka House where you snapped the photo of Miyako Sudo earlier in the game and received the first set of Village Reports. When you enter the room (if you have gotten the Bloody Ring) you will see a cutscene. When it is over, pick up the Bloody Memo and the bloody Sard stone. At this point, you will have to battle Miyako and Masumi. If you’re interested in ways to defeat them, consult a walkthrough or the Enemies FAQ in the PS2 version of the Game’s FAQ Section. Once you have defeated them, the ghost Unrest in Piece will be added to your spirit list. [Masumi Makimura] Head back to the Great Hall storeroom where you got ‘Exhausted Man’ and in his place you will be able to take a shot of Masumi Makimura. ------------------------- B. THE FILES ------------------------- [Village Report 1] Description: Part of a report about "Twins". Contents: "For some reason, one of the statues is in the form of twins. I have also found a description of a "Twin Deities Statue" in the writings lying around the house. In this region, twins serve an unusual purpose. Twin sisters or brothers perform a special ritual here. Each time the ritual it completed, a new Twin Deities Statue is placed somewhere in the village. The ritual occurs every few decades, and judging by the number if Twin Deities I'll be nearby. Miss you!” [Village Report 2] Description: A report about Kurosawa House. Contents: "I looked down into the old well but it was pitch black, and I couldn't see a thing. If you listen closely, you can only hear wind blowing, and it seems that the water has all dried up. I can't tell which was here first, the house or the well. Neither has been used in a while. According to the records, this house used to belong to the powerful Tsuchihara family. In this village, the Osaka, Kiryu, and Tachibana families were also influential. Each house had its own crest, and help power in the village. As a group they were also in charge of a special ritual. Each was a branch of the Kurosawa family, who administered to the ceremony. They performed the role of priests. The Kurosawa name is scattered throughout the literature, but no concrete information is written. I have no doubt that they held absolute power though. Where in the world did the villagers go? And how do you get out of this village? The answers to these questions lie within the Kurosawa house. I'm not sure how I know, but I have a strong feeling about this." [Village Report 3] Description: A report about butterflies. Contents: "I found a small shrine at the top of a long set of stairs, shrouded in mist. It seems very old, but it is well-made, and has not fallen into disrepair. The entrance has a large butterfly crest painted on it. It's the same as the one on the building beyond the large bridge. Butterflies seem to have a special meaning, just like twins. They are frequently mentioned in the ritual literature. "Butterfly" means something else to the villagers too. I notice that the word always appears in writings about the ritual. I may not know its exact meaning, but the fact that the butterfly crest is on a shrine indicates that it is very special indeed. I should investigate further". [Village Report 4] Description: The notes about Misono Hill. Contents: "I came to this hill to take a look at the gate I passed through when I entered the village. But when I tried to find it, the ruined gate was buried under trees and other flora. I can't find the path that we used to come here... This hill is called "Misono Hill". According to literature, this location plays a key role in the ceremony. Right in the middle lies a massive rock, known as the "Offering Stone", and the surrounding area is protected by wards. This "Offering Stone" also seems to be a "Cover" for sealing some kind of hole. What sort of hole needs a gigantic stone like this for a cover? Why does it need to be covered at all? What if this is the very thing I've been searching for, the way out of the village? I have to check this out more thoroughly." [Village Report 5] Description: About a passageway. Contents: "How many days have I been in the village? 2? Maybe 3? It feels like I've been here for years. In this village of endless night, it's easy to lose all sense of time. Miyako is utterly exhausted. Sometimes she manages to give me a weak smile, but it only makes me more uncomfortable. Physically and mentally, she's running on empty. I haven't found a out yet, but sifting through the material I gathered in the village again, I found a clue. A gigantic underground tunnel, called a passageway, connects all the important locations in the village. It is used for travel between the houses during the ceremony, and also store important items. It's difficult to estimate the scale of the passages from the map, but there is sure to be a way out through there. I didn't find any information about the entrance to a passageway. However, there must be a clue somewhere in the Kurosawa house, as they presided over the ceremony. I've decided to leave Miyako here and search the Kurosawa house alone. I'll find a way out of the village and then come back for her." [Bloody Memo] Description: bloody note written by the surveyor. Contents: "I have to go back. There's something I have to give her". [Miyako’s End Memo] Description: Miyako Sudo is strangled by the spirit of her lost boyfriend, Masumi Makimura. Contents: "Masumi and Miyako, who had come looking for him, finally ran to each other in the lost village. Together, they looked for a way out, but Miyako got hurt and had to be left in the Osaka House. Masumi went into the Kurosawa House looking for clues, but got killed by the "Kusabi" there. Miyako, waiting alone in the Osaka House for Masumi, was attacked by his dead spirit. All she could do was beg to know why as Masumi's ghost spirit began strangling her..." ------------------------- C. THE SPIRITS ------------------------- [Miyako Sudo] Wanted to escape with Masumi, but he was turned into a spirit and killed her. [Well Checker] Masumi Makimura. Can hear sound coming from well but cannot find the opening. [Gate Checker] Masumi Makimura, lost surveyor searching for a way to escape the village. [Statue Checker] Masumi Makimura, lost surveyor inspecting statues of guardian deities. [Man at Shrine] Masumi Makimura. Knows that an exit is in the shrine, but can’t break the seal. [Exhausted Man] Masumi Makimura. Tried to escape with lover. Killed by the Kusabi in Kurosawa house. [Unrest in Piece] Masumi Makimura. A surveyor who wandered in the village and was killed by the Kusabi. [Masumi Makimura] Lost surveyor who wants to flee with Miyako. Killed by Kusabi. ------------------------- D. OTHER ITEMS ------------------------- [Bloody Ring] [Sard Stone] Description: A blood-red sard. It was probably left by the surveyor that wandered into the village. Contents: "The Lost Village... There must be a way out of here... How many days has it been since I came here..." ************************* III. HIDE ‘N SEEK ************************* A. WALKTHROUGH ------------------------- CHAPTER 8: HALF-MOON During this night, you will have to go get the Osaka House Crest from the Back Room from Woman in Box. After you defeat her and get the crest, be sure to save, as you will be starting the mini-game as soon as you exit into the Sunken Fireplace room. [‘Running Child’ x3, Osaka House, Sunken Fireplace] As soon as you exit the room, you will see ‘Running Child’ x3. Yes. Three of them. Running away in different directions rather quickly. There are several ways to go about this. 1. Be ready to go through the game more than one time. This is probably the easiest way to go about it, seeing as though you’ll probably want to unlock everything in the game (costumes and such), which means that you’ll be replaying the game on other difficulty levels. Each time you go in you can pick out a different child to catch a photo of and just make sure that you have all 3 by the time you finish the game for the last time. Or… 2. If you’re like me and you’re rather impatient and want to fill up your spirit list right now… yes it is possible to get them all in one go. And what makes it easier about this is that the save lantern is right before this part. Ie) if you don’t get them all in the shot, reload the save and try again until you do. Either way, the children always run to the same location. There will always be one girl (in red—she’s very easy to see and runs the opposite direction of the other kids). There will also be two little boys who run off towards the other wall together. Best idea is to equip Type 90 film as it is the quickest to reload (and you will only need 2 shots with it—nothing that will make or break your gameplay). As soon as the screen turns foggy (signaling ghosts around you) snap a photo of the little girl running towards the far left wall. Then, spin around quickly (using the x button) and catch the two little boys running to the right. Just be sure that the small yellow capture circle are on both of them when you snap the second picture. Go into your spirit list and make sure that you have three different photos of ‘Running Child’ in your list. If you do, go back to the room where you got the crest and save. There are a few other ghosties to get before you leave this house =) At this point, you need to find them in their hiding spots. They are in three different rooms in the house: Back Room, Deluxe Tatami Room and 2F Guestroom. [‘Hiding Child’, Osaka House, Back Room] When you enter the back room, walk out onto the deck where you first took the shot of Miyako through the fog. Look to the cove to the left and you will see a child hiding. Take the shot of him before he disappears. [‘Hiding Child’, Osaka House, Deluxe Tatami Room] Go on in and aim your camera at the corner near the partition where there’s a picture scroll. [‘Hiding Child’, Osaka House, 2F Guestroom] She’s right behind the huge hanging kimono. You’ll need to get behind it. Take the shot of her before she disappears. After you’ve finished capturing all of the children photos, you will need to head back to the Sunken Fireplace Room. Here, you will encounter them all one more time—except this time, you will need to fight them to make them leave for good. They are a bit of a pain because they can run at you in a swarm from a variety of different locations, so the best way to go is to get rid of them as quickly as possible so that you are not overrun. Consult a full FAQ walkthrough or the Enemies guide in the PS2 category for this game if you are having problems. ------------------------- B. THE SPIRITS ------------------------- [Running Child] x3 Was playing hide-and-seek when the Dark came. Unaware of own death. [Hiding Child] x3 Was playing hide-and-seek when the Dark came. Unaware of own death. ************************* IV. CREDITS/CONTACT ************************* The inspiration for this guide came from trying to complete my spirit list and getting overly frustrated at not having certain ghosts in it the first time through. I ended up looking up all of the information (and ghosts) on Mysticcats’s amazing Walkthrough FAQ in the PS2 version of the game’s FAQ files. --NOTE: If you’re looking for any additional information that is not featured in my guide, I would more than recommend their’s. It is one of the most complete guides I have found on this game. --Available here: http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/fatal_frame_2_f.txt I also used this guide to check all of my information once I wrote it out—so mad props to Mysticcat for an awesome overall walkthrough. Through looking at that guide I decided that it would be nice to have one that I didn’t have to search for the ghosts on, where everything was just right in a row and I could just checkmark off the ghosts and items once I got them. Thus, this FAQ was born. If there’s anything you feel that I’m missing or that you think should be included in the guide, please feel free to contact me and I will get it included as soon as possible. You can email me @ flossie116 @ hotmail.com. This guide has only been submitted to: 1. Gamefaqs.com If you find it in any other locations, please email me. Thanks for reading and again, I hope it helps =) --FLoSSiE116 (July 6, 2006)
