Watch has called for an independent investigation into the deaths of
at least 23 Sudanese refugees during a clash with Egyptian police in
Cairo Friday.

The New York-based organization says police acted with brutality while
forcefully dispersing thousands of Sudanese refugees from a makeshift
camp in Cairo. The refugees had staged a three-month long protest to
demand the United Nations refugee agency resettle them in a third
country.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Friday the fatal confrontation
was a terrible and unjustifiable tragedy.

Egypt's Interior Ministry says the deaths were caused by a stampede,
but reporters on the scene said police beat the refugees - including
women and children - with sticks and batons. Some information for this
