President Bush Urges Europe to Put Differences Aside

Mr. Bush gives speech in Brussels, first stop on his five-day European
tour





George Bush waves to onlookers in BrusselsPresident Bush says the
United States and Europe must put past differences aside and focus on
cooperation. He is in Brussels, the first stop on the
president's five-day European tour.

The president is seeking a fresh start with Europe as he begins his
second term in office.

Differences over the war in Iraq have soured relations in recent
years. But in a speech to the European people, Mr. Bush stressed it is
time to move on.

"As past debates fade and great duties become clear, let us begin a
new era of trans-Atlantic unity," he said.

He said the immediate goal is peace throughout the Middle East,
including Iraq.

"Now is the time for established democracies to give tangible
political, economic, and security assistance to the world's newest
democracy," he said.

Mr. Bush meets with NATO and EU leaders on Tuesday. He will also
consult privately during this trip with major critics of his Iraq
policy.
