Egypt Arrests 45 Members of Banned Islamic Group ------------------------------------------------ http://enews.voanews.com/t?ctl=C7835E:2AB91D3 Arrests include some leading members of country's biggest opposition group Egyptian authorities have arrested at least 45 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's biggest opposition group. News reports from Cairo say the arrests took place late Saturday, and include some of the group's leading members. The Brotherhood had planned to demonstrate outside the Egyptian parliament building Sunday to call for political reforms. Several thousand riot police sealed off streets around the building in central Cairo. But the group still gathered for a rally at a mosque a few kilometers away. The Muslim Brotherhood calls for replacing Egypt's secular government with an Islamic state. The group was formally banned in 1954, but its members, running in elections as independents, hold enough seats to make the Brotherhood the largest opposition group in the Egyptian parliament.
