Americans marked the passing of four years with prayers, and quiet reflection. September 11, 2005, dawned bright and clear, much like the morning four years ago that forever changed the nation and the world. At 8:46 a.m., the moment the first of four hijacked airliners slammed into its target - the World Trade Center in New York, Americans paused to remember, to mourn, and to honor the almost 3,000 victims who died in New York, at the Pentagon, and in a field in Pennsylvania. President Bush led a moment of silence on the south lawn of the White House, with the first lady and other dignitaries at his side. There were no words uttered, just the sound of a lone bugler nearby. Earlier in the day, the president attended a private service at a neighborhood church, and later there would be ceremonies and a memorial march through the nation's capital, led by Pentagon officials. But at the exact moment the terrorist attacks began, there was nothing but a respectful quiet at the White House, a time to remember the horrors of September 11, 2001. .
