He spoke Friday after a government report showed the U.S. economy shrank at a 3.8 percent pace during the last three months of 2008.Mr. Obama said the "time for action is now" and called on the Senate to quickly pass the proposed $800 billion stimulus plan that has already cleared the U.S. House of Representatives. A top White House economic advisor says the recession has spread through the entire economy. Economists say the gross domestic product declined because worried consumers cut spending and businesses slashed jobs and investment. These are the worst growth figures in a quarter of a century.
