Clinton made the announcement Tuesday at the White House. She said the money will go to international assistance efforts to help those who have fled their homes in Swat Valley, where government troops are engaged in fierce fighting with Taliban militants. She said the Obama administration hopes those who fled will be able to return home quickly, safely and on a voluntary basis. She said the Pakistani government is fighting a tough battle against the militants. Clinton, the top U.S. diplomat, said the defeat of the Taliban and al-Qaida is in the interest of not only Pakistan and the region, but also of United States. The United Nations says some 1.5 million people have been displaced since the government offensive began in and around the Swat Valley in late April.
