Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to discuss the terror trials, 02 Feb 2010 U.S. Republicans are calling for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack mastermind and his co-conspirators to be tried in a military court. Speaking for the weekly Republican address, Senator Lindsey Graham from the southern state of South Carolina called U.S. President Barack Obama's decision to prosecute the five suspects in civilian court in New York City a "major mistake." The Obama administration has faced increasing opposition from both Republicans and Democrats to prosecuting terror suspects in civilian court. The Obama administration has not ruled out bringing the suspects back before a military tribunal. Graham said Saturday al-Qaida terrorists should not receive the same rights as U.S. citizens. He said the laws of civilian justice could require the government to release information that would compromise future intelligence gathering. He says military courts, which also handle trials for U.S. soldiers, are transparent, competent and safeguard national security. Graham cited the 1995 trial for the man behind the first attempt to blow up the World Trade Center. The senators says that case, the prosecution was required to disclose all known co-conspirators, which included Osama bin Laden. Graham says this revealed to bin Laden he was under surveillance.
