Preliminary data from the Japanese Meteorological Agency says the estimated 6.4 magnitude quake was centered off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, an estimated 10 kilometers below sea level. No tsunami alert was issued. Earlier this month, Japan marked the one year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated coastal northeastern Japan, killing nearly 20,000 people.
