This low will weaken into a trough and cross over the island Tuesday afternoon, shifting winds to a west to northwesterly airstream. A broad area of low pressure will persist over the island on Wednesday with two weak low pressure centres developing far to the northeast and northwest. These two lows are expected to move around each other in the waters between Macquarie Island and New Zealand resulting in variable conditions until a south to southeasterly airstream develops on Thursday, persisting into Friday. Predictability of the positioning of this twin low pressure system is low, with weather, wind and swell forecasts subject to change on Wednesday to Friday. Forecast for the rest of Monday 22 December Cloudy with possible late showers. Winds: East to northeasterly 15 to 25 knots. Seas: 1 to 2 metres. Swell 1: Westerly around 1 metre. Swell 2: North to northeasterly 2 to 3 metres, building. Forecast for Tuesday 23 December Showers tending to rain in the early morning with low cloud and mist developing. Rain easing and mist clearing in the afternoon. Winds: East to northeasterly 15 to 25 knots, possibly reaching 30 knots during the morning. Winds shift west to northwesterly in the afternoon, easing to 10 to 20 knots late. Seas: 2 to 3 metres, abating to 1 to 2 metres from the afternoon.
