DEMOCRATS NEED OPTIMISM! (Posted 2006-06-20 22:59:52 by Ray Lopez) The Democratic party's chances of gaining any seats in the Congress this November, or of winning the presidency in 2008, are pretty much nil, in my opinion. Democrats have failed to come up with any sort of cohesive message that will appeal to voters, and we can't discount the Karl Rove effect, the fact that Bush's in-house genius will always pull out a victory for his team, in spite of anything the opposition can do. But there is something that Democrats can do to overcome these odds. Besides coming up with a cohesive message, they can also come up with a POSITIVE message. Yes, it is time for the Democrats to pull a Ronnie Reagan on the Republicans. In 1980, Reagan was elected president largely due to the fact that he ran a very positive, upbeat campaign against Jimmy Carter, who chose to face his challenges head on and came off looking beaten and somber. At that point in time Americans were ready for a change, and Reagan's sunny optimism and the sunny optimism of his campaign made for an easy victory. Democrats need to run a VERY positive campaign against George Bush and the Republicans in the Congress, not only because of the fact that things are bad and getting worse, but also because a positive Democratic message will help to nullify one of Karl Rove's primary weapons. Rove works by imposing a multi-headed attack on his rivals. One of the effects of this multi-headed attack is for the whole election process to appear so unseemly, that many people choose not to go and vote. Combining this strategy with another aimed at getting out the Republican wingnut vote, and you end up, at worst, with a very close election that can easily be tipped to your favor. By running a very positive and upbeat campaign, Democrats might stand a chance against Rove and the Republicans. A positive campaign may help in getting voters to the polls, voters that otherwise may have stayed away due to the way that Republicans have poisoned the political process in the USA. A positive campaign combined with good, old-fashioned precinct-by-precinct, get-out-the-vote efforts would likely yield some very positive results for Democrats in November and beyond. -------- There are no comments on this post.
