So, I finally understand how it is that the folks who created the first
episode of _Star Trek Continues_, and hope to make more episodes, were able
to avoid copyright infringement.

If your productions don't earn you any money, then you don't have to pay
royalties or anything else.

Since the the production of Star Trek Continues cannot be financed by
selling the content, they have to make money by soliciting donations from
fans.
