A SYNDROME OF TODDLERS WHO ARE LATE IN ACQUIRING LANGAUGE SKILLS? (Posted 2013-10-22 08:59:48 by Ray Lopez) A recent report in _Psychological Science_ shows that toddlers need to be talked to in order to help them properly develop vocabulary and syntax. http://medicalxpress.com/news/2013-10-toddlers-language-skills.html [ http://medicalxpress.com/news/2013-10-toddlers-language-skills.html ] I am willing to bet that within the next 2 to 5 years, we will begin to see pediatricians reporting on a very large percentage of 2 to 4 year old kids who are behind in terms of language development.  This would be a very serious public health issue, for language acquisition and use is the bedrock of intellectual ability. Why would this be the case?  Because their parents are TEXTING.  By forgoing the use of spoken words in place of typing, parents are depriving their children of exposure to language.  Kids need to hear language being used in order to learn how to use it properly.  The pervasive use of texting to talk to spouses, friends, and neighbors, is likely depriving kids of language stimulation they need during their most critical developmental periods. -------- There are no comments on this post.
