In this past year I've moved jobs, states, and, most importantly, servers. It's time to retire the old Core2Quad server that used to host my Gopher server. Heck, nvidia drivers no longer support it's old, old graphics card. Anyway, in my shiny new state of Maryland, I found a shiny new old computer that would become my current web server. I found none other than a Core i5 desktop with 10GB of RAM (and no HDD, of course) in the apartment trash along with a perfectly good ViewSonic monitor with HDMI, VGA, and DVI inputs. These would become the core of the server hosting the gopher hole you are perusing now, though thanks to upgrades it got two hard drives, 16GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA Quadro K420 graphics card. By far, it's the best computer I've ever had, probably most likely due to the vast RAM space. With the rise of yet another new Gopher client (for Palm OS) recently developed by the great Cameron Kaiser of Floodgap Systems himself, I thought it was time to migrate the old Gopher server to its new Maryland home. Doing so was far easier than expected, just requiring the quick install of Gophernicus and copying files over SCP. I can't wait to add new features to the server, especially news (RSS feeds), weather, internet radio playlists, a guestbook, and archives of old computer software, especially for Palm OS. I will focus on posting life stuff on the SDF phlog (mainly bike ride stories and previews of my weekly radio show) while focusing on tech things here, especially new features added to the server and what it took (heh) to add those features.
