Episode 1: Door Games * How to describe a "door game", first off why "door"? * Online, often multiplayer, games played asynchronously (turn based). Some games also allow for real-time multiplayer. Some are single player only or can be both multi and single player. * Slow burn, one turn per day usually. Today weeks could go by before your opponent(s) make their move and you get to take another turn. So have many games going at once. * Many genres and gameplay types: strategy, board games, puzzles, action (examples?) * Some games only really work with a high player population, such as Trade Wars * Limitations of the terminal: ASCII / Extended ASCII or PETSCII or ATASCII (are there ATASCII door games?) And using ANSI for colors or cursor positioning. Also, baud rates (how fast characters can be drawn on the screen) limits the game design and challenges the creator to be efficent. * MUDs (precursors to MMORPGs?) * Networked games (multi-BBS door games) * Most popular games: LORD, Trade Wars, etc... * History: "First"(ish?) door game? * Games is only one dimension of the BBS world, although this episode focused on games we don't want our audience (who is not already familiar with BBSs) thinking that BBSs are *just* about games. .
