The last month or so was rough with the long-distance move, but we're slowly settling in to a new house in a new province, and are content to not move again for the foreseeable future. This was the longest move we've ever done - 13 hours by car - but not the most difficult, which would have been our move to Canada from the States. Moving to another country is one of those once-in-a-lifetime things, or at least it should be. If you're already a citizen of the country you are moving to and alone, it's not too bad, but throw a family of non-citizens into the mix, and it gets complicated quickly. For this move, I had to drive out a few days ahead of my wife. One of the things that kept me company on the 13-hour drive (aside from caffeine) was old-time radio. I had files downloaded and playlists setup on my phone so I could listen for hours without too much fuss. One of them was 'Adventures by Morse' [0], a 1940's vintage adventure show. Most of the old shows are available on archive.org, and the best recordings have been preserved and uploaded by the "Old Time Radio Researchers Group" [1]. I'm a fan of the detective genre; some of the best include "Richard Diamond, Private Detective" [2], "Adventures of Philip Marlowe" [3] and "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" [4]. On the comedy front, I have lately been enjoying Jack Benny [5]. An amazingly well-written and produced western series is Gunsmoke [6]. A personal favorite and "newer" show from the 70s and 80s that I actually listened to as a kid is the "CBS Radio Mystery Theater" [7]. I think one of the most interesting things for me is the social commentary and history exposed in the shows. Even though the so-called golden age of radio (30s - 60s) was a very different time, there are still commonalities. Occasionally you can hear news snippets from that time period, or public service announcements, for example spots urging people to buy war bonds, or to not hoard food during war-time rationing. Even the ads are an interesting window into the past.
