StarTrek for the DEC Rainbow 100 This is the classic computer game played by students, hackers, and Real Programmers since the late Sixties. There is hardly a computer on which it has not been implemented, and it has been found on distribution Sysgen disks and tapes from various vendors. This is "public domain" software, fer sure, but leave us not forget that "STARTREK", "KLINGON", "MR. SPOCK", and all the other characters who serve aboard the ENTERPRISE are trademarks of Paramount Pictures, and woe betide the scurvy pirate who trie to make a buck off of this!! .PAGE When you are prompted for a COMMAND, enter one of the 3-letter commands (NAV, SRS, LRS, PHA, TOR, SHI, DAM, COM, or XXX). Remember, you must use UPPER-CASE (i.e., CAPS-ONLY) for all commands. If you type an unrecognized command, you will get the list of acceptable commands. Note that some of the commands, like 'NAV' and 'TOR', require additional input. All commands must be in UPPER CASE, or it won't recognize them. The commands which require additional input do not buffer commands, so wait for the prompt. (This is a "feature" of Microsoft MNASIC-86.) The Galaxy is divided into an 8x8 quadrant grid, and each quadrant is further divided into an 8x8 sector grid. The ENTERPRISE (under you command) is located somewhere in the Galaxy with a random number of KLINGONS to be found and destroyed. Just to make things interesting, you also have a time limit (in stardates) to accomplish this mission, or the FEDERATION OF PLANETS will be conquored. .PAGE NAV NAVIGATION AND WARP ENGINE CONTROL --- ---------- --- ---- ------ ------- Course is a circular numerical 4 3 2 vector arrangement as shown. \ | / Integer and real values may be \|/ used. (Thus course 1.5 is half- 5 ---*--- 1 way between 1 and 2) /|\ / | \ Values may approach 9.0, which 6 7 8 itself is equivalent to 1.0 COURSE One warp factor is the size of one quadrent. Therefore, to get from quadrant 6,5 to 5,5, you would use course 3, warp factor 1. .PAGE SRS SHORT RANGE SCAN --- ----- ----- ---- Shows you a scan of your present quadrant. Symbology on your screen is as follows: your starship's position +K+ Klingon battle cruiser >B< Fereration starbase (for refuel/repair/re-arm) * star A condensed status report is also presented. .PAGE LRS LONG RANGE SCAN --- ____ _____ ____ Shows conditions in space for one quadrant on each side of the ENTERPRISE (which is in the middle of the scan.) The scan is coded in the form "###", where the units digit is the number of stars, the tens digit is the number of starbases, and the hundreds digit is the number of Klingons. Example - 207 = 2 Klingons, 0 Starbases, 7 Stars .PAGE PHA PHASER CONTROL --- ------ ------- Allows you to destroy the Klingon battle cruisers by zapping them with suitably large units of energy to deplete their shield power. (Remember, Klingons have phasers, too!) TOR PHOTON TORPEDO CONTROL --- ------ ------- ------- Torpedo course is the same as used in Warp Engine Control. If you hit the Klingon vessel, he is destroyed and cannot fire back at you. If you miss, you are subject to his phaser fire. In either case, you are also subject to the phaser fire of all other Klingons in the quadrant. .PAGE SHI SHIELD CONTROL --- ------ ------- Defines the number of energy units to be assigned to the deflector shields. Energy is taken from total ship's energy. Note that the status display total energy includes shield energy. DAM DAMAGE CONTROL REPORT --- ------ ------- ------ Gives the state of repair of all devices, where a negative 'state of repair' shows that a device is temporarily damaged. .PAGE COM LIBRARY-COMPUTER --- ---------------- The library-computer contains six options: CUM CUMULATIVE GALACTIC RECORD Shows computer memory of the results of all previous short and long range sensor scans. STA STATUS REPORT Shows the number of Klingons, Starbases, and stardates remaining in the game, TOR PHOTON TORPEDO DATA Gives directions and distance from the ENTERPRISE to all Klingons in the current quadrant. .PAGE COM LIBRARY-COMPUTER (CONT.) --- ---------------- ------- DOC STARBASE DOCKING DATA Gives directions and distance to any starbases in the current quadrant. DIR DIRECTION/DISTANCE CALCULATOR Allows you to enter START and END coordinates to the direction/distance calculator (i.e., for sector to sector or quadrant to quadrant navigation.) GAL GALACTIC 'REGION NAME' MAP Prints the names of the sixteen major galactic regions refered to in this game. .PAGE HEL HELP FACILITY --- ---- -------- For help understanding the commands. (What you are doing now.) XXX EXIT THE GAME --- ---- --- ---- Terminates the current games and lets you start a new game or exit back to MBASIC-86.
