Lent began today, forty days of fasting between Ash
Wednesday and Easter. We got ashes on foreheads, 
Evy, baby, me. We marveled at purple vestments, 
covered baptismal font, shrouded crosses.

I'm bumbling into this fast. Our priest says 
Christians have celebrated Lent since the fourth 
century. Neither Evy nor I inherited a tradition 
to guide Lenten practice.

For our fast, we plan to pray a little more, chant
some psalms, and I'll write a little. We aren't
improving ourselves--that's the imperative of the
Californian ideology. We are, I think, just trying
to be quiet in the wilderness with Him.
