# Stargazing Starter Kit - alfred's Gemlog My interest in stargazing began with a visit to the Lowell Observatory. I soon bought a small Dobsonian reflector, and enjoyed finding and viewing Saturn, Jupiter, M42, etc. There's a learning curve to tracking objects with it, due to the upside-down image orientation. Expensive equipment isn't necessary for novices; at star parties, many regulars with fancy telescopes are happy to show off the deep-sky objects they find. I'm content finding and viewing planets, constellations, and some Messier objects. But my Dob needs a stable support; otherwise, it's too short if placed on the ground. Would a refractor and binoculars suffice? => gemlog.gmi Back to Gemlog contents Last edited: 2025-08-07
