Solid-top guitars have vastly better tone than even well-made laminates ... or so we are told. I'm not so sure. Why not? Because properly-blinded studies have shown us that even wine experts can't tell the difference between expensive and cheap wine, or even between red wine and white wine that has food coloring! Blinded experts proved unable to distinguish, by sound alone, expensive vintage violins from well-made modern ones. Why would it be any different with guitars? In my experience, a guitar student's progress is limited by their practice time and quality of instruction, not the presence of a laminate top.
