# Utilitarian Justifications Fail (for me) - alfred's Gemlog I enjoyed riding motorcycles in my 30s and 40s. But I could never justify the cost of motorcycling (purchase and depreciation, maintenance, insurance, protective gear) through mere fuel savings. Securing cargo is awkward without expensive, installed luggage, and cargo (and passenger) capacity is far lower than that of a car. After a long ride, I was often too cold, too hot, too wet, and/or too uncomfortable. There's great camaraderie to be found among fellow riders, but in the end, I found I couldn't justify it (as an extra vehicle) on utilitarian grounds. Riding was simply fun, and arguably, good therapy. => gemlog.gmi Back to Gemlog contents Last edited: 2025-08-26
