# Nostalgia for a Fast and Light Desktop - alfred's Gemini capsule


I didn't use computers regularly until after college, in my first corporate job. We launched spreadsheets and word processors from the DOS command line, and developed blazing speed on the keyboard with muscle memory. No mice. 

Within a few years, Windows provided a more intuitive desktop metaphor, but with so much overhead it slowed us down. 

I wish all my desktop computing needs could be met in a CLI environment, but it appears only partially achievable. I could get by with text-based word processors and email, but I've not found other desktop functions to be adequately replicated by terminal programs.
