# Trekking Poles - alfred's Gemlog


Trekking poles have been invaluable to me in eliminating knee pain while hiking downhill sections. 

I bought Komperdell poles from LL Bean (private labeled as "HikeLite" poles). Although they rely on twist-lock mechanisms (conventional wisdom is that cam-locks are better), they have been highly reliable for about ten years. In fact, I have a spare pair gathering dust, because the originals are still good! They are only just starting to slip slightly under normal use, but not enough to be a concern yet. 

The poles also serve as structural components of my backpacking shelter (tarp over hammock, or net tent).
