# Are Interstates the Safest Roads? - alfred's Gemlog


A bit of unconventional wisdom: I suspect that interstate highways, even with their higher speed limits, are safer than other roads. Why?

* There is no oncoming traffic in another lane - it all flows in the same direction, separated by some sort of median. So you won't have an oncoming vehicle turn left and cross in front of you while doing so, or enter your lane to pass someone else going too slow for them in their own direction. 

* There are no intersections where someone might blow through a red light or pull out in front of you.
