(o o) ____________ooO_( )_Ooo______________________________2021_11_12_ :: have an affair with an apple :: My son got a used, over ten years old Apple MacBook Pro for me. Since years I prefer Linux on ThinkPads. As my "everyday" machine I use a ThinkPad T520 [1] with Linux Mint [2], Windows resides in a VirtualBox [3] - unfortunately I need it for one or two programs I cannot run under Linux. But I have wanted to take a look on macOS for a long time. So, here we are ... The MacBook Pro was very well treated and maintained by the previous owner. No scratches, no dents. New battery, original power adapter. As a service for daddy my son installed macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina) and some other usefull stuff. Technical Data MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) Processor 2,53 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Graphics Intel HD Graphics 288 MB SSD 128 GB And the best: I only spent 150 EUR (about 170 USD). For me a very resonable price for a device in this condition. The first impression is extremely positive. The GUI is ok, the terminal I love!! First I changed the shell to BASH - old tradition! Then I installed "The Missing Package Manager for macOS" - Homebrew [4]. With 'brew' I installed 'cowsay' [5] and 'fortune' [6], because: only a terminal that starts with the cows wisdom, is a good terminal ;-) macbook:~ user$ brew install cowsay macbook:~ user$ brew install fortune To get the 'cows wisdom' every time you start the terminal, you need to append one line to '.profile', located in your home directory: fortune | cowsay For editing you can use VIM (Vi IM proved) or, for softies like me, 'nano'. Starting your terminal may result in this: _______________________________________ / "Whoever undertakes to set himself up \ | as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is | | shipwrecked by the laughter of the | | gods." | | | \ -- Albert Einstein / --------------------------------------- \ ^__^ \ (oo)\_______ (__)\ )\/\ ||----w | || || macbook:~ user$ ________________________________________________________________ Next I wanted to enter the 'world of gopher' and I started to search for a gopher browser. A search in 'brew' led to no result. macbook:~ user$ brew search gopher I also installed 'MacPorts' [7], one more package manager for macOS. A quick search and I got, what I was looking for: macbook:~ user$ sudo port search gopher ... phetch @1.1.0 (net) A terminal client designed to help you quickly navigate the gophersphere. ... So I installed 'phetch' [8] and entered the 'gopher universe' with an extremely good gopher client, I never used before macbook:~ user$ sudo port install phetch I was so excited of 'phetch', that I also use it now under Linux. I continue to explore my macBook. I want to take a closer look on the GUI, but it is hard to leave the terminal ....
