When I was young my father told me he would buy me a computer. He brought home a TI-99/4a computer. It was not a well supported computer and software was sparse in our country. Still, I knew what computer games looked like, from magazines, and it had a Basic interpreter so I spent my spare time writing games to play. I remember writing a Super Star Trek clone, a Breakout clone and a Scramble clone. Then saving them to tape to play later. The Basic instruction set was quite limited but I learnt how to create adsr sound envelopes with loops, how to create frame by frame animation and there were also resources like PC World code listings to learn from. I think if he had bought me a better suppported computer I wouldn't have had to use my ingenuity as much as I did. Neccesity is the mother of invention. I think it is for this reason I tend to use older, repurposed tech. I am writing this on my newest laptop, which is 15 years old. As it is too old to cope with many modern apps, it means I use the command line more, which I find a distraction free space.
