For solo-role-playing, but also for traditional game-master I used an oracle system to have on the fly inspiration when the players do or ask something unexcpected. This "Delphos" is one of such "oracles" and has three components namely Sparta, Athens and Thebes. Sparta -------------------------------- Sparta is short and precise. To any question Sparta answers with two possible answers a "Yes" or "No". But Athens, being more "sophisticated" and posh, usually putting either a "and..." or a "but..." and then adds two to four enigmatic words that I must interpret. This is the basis of my whole system. What follows is the rules I'm experimenting with right now. The Sparta part is straight-forward to implement. This is but one way in four simple steps. 1. First make a question to the oracle. 2. Guess how likely it is to be true and grade it as follows: "Implausible (E), Unlikely (D), Iffy (C), Likely (B) and Plausible (A)". 3. Choose how many dice you want to roll either 1, 2 or 3. The more dice you roll the more predictable the answer will be. This is entirely up to you and the type of story you want to play. Stick to 1 dice for crazy action, roll 3 when you want a serious tone. You can change your approach at any time. 4. Roll the dice, add them together and consult the "Target Number" on Sparta Table on the following page. Any number below the TN is a No; else it is a Yes. The Sparta Table -------------------------- Grade 1d 2d 3d .......................... A 2+ 5+ 6+ B 3+ 6+ 8+ C 4+ 7+ 10+ D 5+ 8+ 13+ E 6 10+ 16+ -------------------------- Athens --------------------------------------- Many times a simple Yes or No question would suffice. If that's so, you many skip Athens completely. Otherwise select 2 to 5 words from your Words List using whatever method you see fit. A variant of these method is to use sentences or fragments of text that you find inspiring, like quotes from your favorite fantasy book or films. That's what I'm using more often as of lately, with great results. But each imagination is different, so experiment. Let's say I'm writing a Second World War fiction. My hero, Lt Madeupski is firing a bazooka at some Germans in what looks like an earth and stone bunker. So my question is "Will the bazooka penetrate the bunker?". I think that's likely to be the case, so that's grade B. Then, I choose to roll 2 dice. I get a 5 and 4. 5 + 4 = 9, which is higher than the Target Number of 6. So, it penetrates. As I'm not so sure about the effects of that round in the bunker, beyond it's going to be nasty, and not desiring to make a hundred question, I decide to give Athens a chance. I get "sanctuary, shirt, violin" which I interpret as the rocket makes some nice explosion (violin) but that the German crew, seeing their demise, escaped to an underground shelter below the bunker (sanctuary). Oddly enough, they left some bits of their uniforms (shirt). Thebes Or "sets of questions" Let's suppose your character faces a set of more than two alternative choices. For example a general, fighting the vanguard of a larger enemy army, might be considering: a) attacking now, before the enemy is reinforced, b) lure the enemy into a trap, c) flee, d) pretend his army is larger, and so on. In this situation, instead of making four or more questions, you could simply array the questions assigning to each some dice rolls. (1 dice set of questions) 1-2 Attack now 3 Lure the enemy into a trap 4-5 Flee 6 Pretend his army is larger, so they aren't attacked end{player_notes" Rolling a dice, I get a 3, so my general will try to lure the enemy into a trap A similar approach can be used when there are a series of more than two alternative outcomes to a decision. Somple word list for Athens For this list you may roll a 1d10 and 1d6. These will give you your line number. Then roll 1d6 to choose one word from the rolled line. 11 abuse, advice, agree, airship, ambush, angel, 12 anxious, angry, argument, arrive, art, artist, 13 ask, baby, backpack, barley, beach, bear, 14 bee, beer, beautiful, beggar, belly, betray, 15 bison, boat, book, boring, boss, bow, 16 boy, brave, bug, bully, buy, break, 21 brothers, cactus, candle, capture, care, careless, 22 cart, castle, cave, crazy, chain, change, 23 chapel, chariot, chase, child, clean, city, 24 cloud, cold, conflict, cook, country, cow, 25 creep, crops, cozy, cross, crow, crowd, 26 crown, cruel, cub, cup, curse, dance, 31 dart, dawn, day, death, defeat, delay, 32 zombie, demon, departure, desert, develop, dinosaur, 33 divide, doctor, dog, door, dream, dumb, 34 eagle, earth, elf, elk, energy, envy, 35 escape, evil, fail, fall, fame, farm, 36 father, fear, fern, field, fire, fish, 41 fisherman, flies, flower, foe, food, forest, 42 found, freedom, friend, frog, fun, generous, 43 ghost, giant, girl, glue, God, goblin, 44 gold, grass, grow, guide, hail, happy, 45 heaven, heal, help, hermit, hero, hidden, 46 hill, home, hook, horse, hungry, husband, 51 hurt, hut, ice, innocent, island, jaw, 52 jealous, joy, kayak, key, kid, kidnap, 53 kill, kitchen, lake, lamb, leave, lie, 54 light, lightning, loose, lost, lovers, luck, 55 lust, magic, man, marsh, meet, message, 56 mirror, mist, moon, monster, mother, mountain, 61 move, mud, naked, night, noise, nut, 62 oak, oats, old, open, orphan, outdoors, 63 owl, ox, passion, pain, palace, pale, 64 path, peace, pen, plot, poem, prophet, 65 poison, poor, potatoes, praise, present, prey, 66 priest, prince, princess, prison, punish, quiet, 71 rabbit, rain, rescue, return, revenge, rifle, 72 river, rope, ruin, rumor, saint, sanctuary, 73 scaffold, scales, science, sea, secret, servant, 74 shepherd, shirt, shop, show, siblings, sick, 75 singer, sisters, song, sooth, spring, slave, 76 sleep, smeel, smile, snow, spider, spit, 81 split, spy, stairs, stars, steal, stores, 82 storm, strong, study, stop, struggle, swim, 83 sword, success, summer, sun, tale, talk, 84 tea, temperance, tent, thank, thread, thread-bare, 85 tiny, tired, tip, tooth, torture, tower, 86 tower, town, transform, trap, travel, treasure, 91 tree, trial, trick, truce, trumpet, trunk, 92 trust, truth, turn-on, ugly, valiant, victory, 93 violin, village, wagon, wait, walk, war, 94 warrior, waste, water, wave, web, werewolf, 95 wheel, whine, wine, wind, window, winter, 96 wire, wish, witch, work, wound, yeoman, 01 zen, nothing, empty, void, nothing, dust, 02 fool, steal, skeleton, still, infinite, clock, 03 damned, dam, breeze, gale, ork, mask, 04 no, wasteland, prairie, mad, salt, compass, 05 sundown, twilight, cold, mourn, tears, stone, 06 sunk, castaway, hope, crush, firefly, seed.
