Touching My Father's Soul by Jamling Tenzy Norgay Rating = **** Jamling was the lead Sherpa on the climbing team doing an IMAX film of climbing Everest during the same climbing season that Jon Krakauer wrote about in Into Thin Air. Jamling's perspective on the deaths on the mountain that year don't differ much from what I remember of Krakauer's opinions. Some of the best climbers in the world made bad decisions, likely due to commercial pressures. Jamling's father was Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa who accompanied Edmond Hillary to the top of Everest, making him either the first or second person to summit Everest. Jamling's look back at how that affected his father is interesting, and not that different from many other cases of sudden and unwanted celebrity. Jamling also digs deep into the spiritually of the mountain and how that intersects with the people who have lived on its shadow for generations. Overall, the book is an interesting read and a fairly detailed look at the logistical, physical , and spiritual requirements of mounting an attempt at the Everest summit.
