This isn't totally 100% remote control as I haven't found a USB to 
RS-232 that will communicate with my FT-450D (yet), but I do have SSH 
enabled on my Ubuntu laptop and intend on using a Windows laptop for 
FT8 work when I get my SignaLink USB TNC.

This means I can transmit from the other side of the room using my 
Surface 6.  My Ubuntu laptop is used as my APRS beacon control, so it's 
able to transmit using my Yaesu FT-7800R on APRS calling frequency 
(144.390 MHz). I can monitor the Tx/Rx log from Direwolf using SSH as 
well as handle any other tasks remotely. I do have my FT-7800R set out 
to terminate transmission after 3 minutes just in case something gets 
hung up in Direwolf or with the hardware (to keep my station in 
compliance with the Rules).

It is my hope to get CAT control via a compatible USB to RS-232 cable. 
I've seen a few posts saying that cables sourced from China can be hit 
or miss since the controller chip can be flashed to show a particular 
type. The one I got said it was an FTDI cable, but it was unable to 
communicate with the radio.  I'm not sure if it's the cable or the 
radio.

I will say that my radio is an older FT-450D, and I haven't flashed its 
ROM to a newer version of firmware. It's possible that could be an 
issue as well. Perhaps I need to tinker with it a bit more to see if I 
can get it working. If I can get the CAT control working, then I should 
be able to have a fully remotely controlled HF station.
