Hi, this is the first entry in my gopher log (aka phlog). I'm not 
sure whether I'll write here regularly or not. I'm in two minds as 
to whether reviving a mostly forgotten protocol has any use. In the 
end, all I need is text. Of course, I could put plain text into a 
web site just as easily, but I've always been a bit of a luddite 
contrarian. Even when I was a teenager in the 90s, and CDs were 
taking over, I stuck with records for the most part. Because they 
were usually cheaper and I hated to see people chucking out old 
stuff that was still good. Maybe also to be bloody minded? 
Rebelling against consumerism? I had this idea that the old days 
were better. What has that got to do with gopher? Not much, but 
it's an unpretentious medium of communication by necessity. No 
one's creating a gopher site to sell you anything, as far as I 
know. I like that.
