This might come as a complete surprise to some, but I'm not fuming at the seams about the World Wide Web as it stands. I mean yeah, don't get me wrong, having most of the Internet consolidated to, like, ten-ish sites at most... that SUCKS. Doesn't really help that most attempts at actually trying to escape this stupid paradigm end up being all like, "Eh, you know what, our userbase is over at [INSERT SOCIAL MEDIUM HERE], let's just move there instead. **Lame.** But, on the counterpoint, I do know that even in the most stagnant, disease-ridden corner of the social media that makes up 90% of the internet today, there's still a good account or two, still willing to use their brain in a sea of sensationalism and "THIS NEW NEWS ARTICLE WILL MAKE YOU SO FUCKING MAD YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BELIEVE IT AT ALL!!!"... except TikTok. I don't like TikTok very much. But even then, I personally think the 'ol WWW could be fixed, or at least have it's biggest problems taken care of. Neocities is already a pretty good step in the right direction, but the main problem would be getting the engagement-addled youth to pull themselves away from their infinite feed... or how surpirisingly hard it is to start up an online forum these days without having to become reliant on Discord. Which itself is a can of worms of an iceberg that I'm not in the mood to desbribe in it's entirety right now. That, and it doesn't help matter that the global attention span took quite a nosedive, even before GenAI's promises of infinite, short-term engagement came along. I wish I could do something about that, but I'm just a denzien of the gophernet; I don't think I'd have the skills needed to be able to enact societal change. Sucks, but what can y'do. Even with all that... I don't think the web's entirely a lost cause. We've done plenty of awesome things there, even with the onset, doom and gloom of the modern social media website. To name a few: * The Minecraft Create Mod * WebAssembly * The VOGONS Vintage Driver Library * 86Box * The Arch Linux User Repository And that's just off the top of my head. There IS hope. The gophernet's a much needed change of pace, though; I'm getting kind of sick of the same 'ol tabloid crap I get, and the cat, dog, and bun posts I consume to wash the taste off my brain's starting to undergo diminishing returns. Bluesky isn't really much better, either. Call me an idealist fool, I'd rather be one than to take my own life.
