DEAR KEN, I THINK THE WORLD IS CRAP AND I WANT A WORLD WHERE EVERYBODY IS NICE, SHARES, NOBODY IS GREEDY. HOW CAN I DO THAT? As an ideal, it is, indeed quite noble. Transitioning to such a human environment would be a tremendous social endeavor but certainly quite possible. One of the most difficult issues to tackle is that of authorities | power structure. To construct a new society, it would probably take several generations to achieve to completion, as each generation embeds the concepts to the new generation from babies onwards, stripping away the trapping of old world mentality. Some aspects to make it a reality will be tricky to uphold; The engineers of such a system would have to be, primarily, Historians. The forgetting of the past will require someone to remember, in order to nudge society back into such a goal when it strays off the path. There is the "immigrant phenomenon" (I call it that) as well; First Generation moves into a new land. It sacrifices all for the next generation. The next generation becomes embedded in the new culture, and rejects the old entirely and tries to throw off trappings of their parents. The generation AFTER that seems to be a fusion of old and new; sometimes rejecting THEIR parents ideals and embracing that of their grandparents; or attempting to. In extreme examples, they become the Mega-Orthodox Carriers of the Flame of their culture, Preachers of The Old Ways, feeling as if they are the 'last generation' of their kind. I don't know what happens in the 4th generation. Generational effects would have to be taken into consideration. But that can be mitigated entirely with parenting classes. Social engineering would take a lot of work to implement but isn't impossible. BUT, if you're speaking of something that we could enjoy, in OUR time, - an Intentional Community; that is possible; you have the "Rule of 150" to consider; it might be hard to get past 150 members without a structure. That seems to be a limit based on the nature of Networks themselves; some kind of limit of the human brain (adults are able to hold about 100-150 distinct objects/ideas/attributes in their mind at a single moment; we think it's just 3-7 but really each of those '3 - 7" items contains dozens of attributes in themselves and network connections that require manipulations.)... Anyway... it's possible. We another hurdle to overcome as well; the amount of us that is "human" vs Animal appears to be but a 6 cell thick layer on top of the rest of our brain, which we share with our nearest neighbors; we're primarily animal with a little 'skin' of human on top. Our ability to reason is primarily influenced by our emotions; it is how we can decide at all; its an emotional 'push' that causes reason to function; and reason can, in turn, influence emotion in a feedback loop, but it starts with emotion; it's built-in to the loop. I think any hurdle can be overcome; if nothing else, in our imagination. And if you can engage the imagination of enough individuals to successfully be able to form societies; well, as long as their imaginations are engaged and in alignment with your goals; then you can achieve your dreams on a tremendous scale. But those are my thoughts. What are yours?
