Thank you, Jerome Feldman, author of From Molecule to Metaphor: A Neural Theory of Language (2008) for this.* He calls it the SEA Cycle. I've been chasing after this vague #leakytriangle notion; #binary isn't enough - it's good, but not enough.* True/False, Right/Wrong - all of splitting into "two absolutes", while useful, is maddening when trying to figure out the nature of learning, memory, growth, etc. So here, is a simple triangle.* I like this: What is traveling along the arrows?* #time*** You have a #structure* ; a thing - it can be a person, it can be an idea; it can be an "anything". There's #experience - if it's idea, it can be tested and tried out.* If it is a person, it can go out with their assumptions and then bam - hit by the world. And then, to varying degrees, of success, it or he or she or you or me, #adapts This forms a new #structure - perhaps resembling the old one, changing/adapting due to experience, it's not quite what it was. Ever meet an old friend and say, "Wow, you're not who you used to be."* and they say, "Oh ,I've been through a lot.* It changed me." It works with memory: You approach the world with what you think is the way it is.* But then you experience things that don't fit into your structure; and you might fight to MAKE things fit into your structure.* But whether you manage to make things outwardly change, you change - you adapt from the experience. You may become bitter if you expected things to go your way and they didn't. You may accept the changes and change yourself, making a new you in the process. I love this little triangle.* It's even simpler than the #doubleloop #learning model that I've seen everywhere and applied to a bunch of stuff. This can apply to simple things over short periods or time; or to timespans extending across thousands of years. I like it. Is this my "leaky triangle" I was searching for?* Well, if it isn't, it's pretty darned close to it. -Ken PS some of my other leaky triangle notions are on [1]http://system-of-systems.com [caption id="attachment_19089" align="alignnone" width="420"][2]Structure, experience, adaptation cycle.
