I believe metaphor is the _only_ way we grasp a thing by the
   mind.
   After all, we do not grasp a thing with our mind.
   We grasp objects with our hands.
   Grasping things with your mind is a metaphor for understanding.
   Understanding is also likely a metaphor, but I'd have to look up
   the etymology.
