JRR Tolkein embedded a lot of Catholic-friendly mythology in LOTR and not the least bit accidentally. Some aren't even hidden: "The Secret Fire", Gandalf's master, *is* the Holy Spirit in Trinitarian theology but with a more Latin bend to it than the Orthodox or most of the Protestant branches but certainly compatible enough. It's not even speculation. Tolkien said so in interviews. Secret Fire. Holy Spirit. Hiding in plain sight but as it's mythologized thereby being overlooked by many. But it would be a threat to the kind of group addressed by "Beloved" in the OP. and thereby "of Satan". == Well, going by the thoroughness of the list, if they investigated and discovered the connection, for it to be Catholic would be worst than Satanist to them. I remember a *few* growing up that would ask, "Are you Christian or Catholic?" Always seemed like a stupid question to me. But perhaps you're right: they saw magic and went, "oh, bad". Generally though, I think they were thinking of the LOTR subculture as being incompatible and having hung around ppl who were/are VERY into LOTR subculture, I suppose they have a point :P == I'm known some fundie ppl who were very well educated, at least as much as to identify who their 'enemies' were and why in great detail. I don't assume all ppl in a particular group uneducated but they could easily be barking up the wrong tree as it were. ==
