I remember growing up in the 80s the girls that were mean girls. They were the minority but they ruled the school. They were called mean girls then too but the movie made it a household word. It was all like stereotypes out of a John Hughes movie. The mean girls dated the jocks who together teased the band nerds and the goth kids. Of course, MOST girls and boys in school were just regular people. My mother has stories of mean girls when she went to school too. Small group of girls. Her first day of high school, they looked her up and down, made a comment and walked away. From then point on, she was tagged and her whole high school was colored by that 10 second experience. That was decades ago for her but she still remembers it. I dealt with bullies and meangirls in school. Boys are called bullies, girls usually called meangirls - why different terms? I don't know. Boys engaged in "meangirl" behavior too. Staring without saying a word. Looking you up and down and making a dismissive smirk. Side comments. Finger pointing while whispering to someone else. Nicknames. That's what I mean by meangirl stuff. Some girl bullies existed too. That would be girls that were more physical, chasing, grabbing, cornering someone into confrontation to watch them squirm. Just awful stuff.
