It was somewhat when I was in elementary school (staying strictly to the text and not allowed to move from it without a good reason) but it's formalized now. It's good for academia training (and useful if one has to go to court in their lives for something and needs traceable evidence) yet it *can* limit lateral thinking severely and can wreck creativity entirely if pushed too hard. Why? In life, we're NOT always in court. We're NOT always in academia. Plus, if all knowledge was limited to what someone's done before, what new will arise?
