Well, my impression has always been that Americans are primarily rule followers.  Even when Americans break rules, there are usually -other- rules that they keep.  Americans learn from an early age to stand in lines and wait patiently. This does not appear to match up with the rest of the world.  It seems that Americans are the oddity, and surging crowds are the world norm.  -Kenneth
