That Old Song Every time I lift my old guitar to play It never fails, I hear somebody say, "Hey, let me have that for a minute now; There's a song I know--if I remember how.... "I used to know it, but it's been so long... Oh, I wish I could remember that old song. I played it every day for my old friends...." And on and on he goes, and never ends. I'm waiting while he dithers with my git And racks his mind for some old corny hit That he used to know, but, "Gee, it's been so long...." Oh, I wish he could remember that old song. Take heed if you would for a moment lend Your instrument, for all men seem to tend To think they know one, but it's been so long That they never can remember that old song. They will stand and fidget for the longest time, And the best they do is come up with this rhyme: "I used to know it, but it's been so long; Oh, I wish I could remember that old song!"
