# Pursuing a HAM radio license 2025-06-26 I happened upon a couple of Baofeng UV-5RM Plus units at a local bin store and picked them up for cheap. I've been using them to listen to the local repeater. Turns out my city has a fairly active HAM radio scene. Who knew? We had a flash flood warning tonight, so I tuned in to the repeater. They had activated SKYWARN and lots of people were reporting in severe weather sightings. So yeah, I think I'm going to pursue a HAM radio license. I downloaded a study deck of questions from the license exam to use with Anki and I've been working through those every day or two. The material is fairly easy to pick up. I've been passing practice exams fairly consistently too. It's also cool that there is some decent overlap between the HAM community and the Linux community. It's cool when you find a hobby and find that it's suited for people that are into your other hobbies.
