from: mw3 date: 29 september 2024 scene: blue couch, kitchen table, quiet time after lunch medium: thinkpad x201, tandy wp-2 title: gophermap dimension fortress trying to figure out gopher and gophermaps. i made a test gophermap. gopher is full of ambiguity. questions: - is display of blank lines (blank line outputs blank line) an official part of the format? - is display of lines that begin with whitespace part of the spec? lynx and umn gopher do it. but they display i selectors too, and that is not part of the standard for sure. - is it better to use i selectors or just text? - is a text line just a line without tabs? or a line with leading whitespace? - does a selector begin with '/' ? - do all gopher servers use the '/0/...' '/1/...' style of selectors? i suppose i will find answers eventually. but since i am working on something i intend to use to publish writing, it occurred to me to write the questions out. the questions themselves are interesting. if i learn the answers, i may write them up, and that would be useful, in addition to interesting. time will tell. it is all part of the fun ;)
