=========================================================================== Horses in the Sky =========================================================================== Title : Horses in the Sky Artist : Silver Mt. Zion Genre : Art Rock, Neo-Folk/Post-Folk Released: 2005 There have been many albums lauded for their political stance, rebellious nature, or cutting lyrics. But none of them come close to the chilling and poignant commentary of Silver Mt. Zion's "Horses in the Sky". Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra La La Band, or Silver Mt. Zion, is known for their sound that escapes definition, as well as their focus on lyrical magic. Orchestral strings, vocal group canons, and folk rock instrumentation meet experimental prog-rock songwriting, post-rock sound design, and impressive lyrical work. Efrim Menuck (of Godspeed You! Black Emperor fame) sings off-kilter vocals about war, pain, loss, sadness, and other atrocities of human nature, such as the chilling drone and refrain at the end of "Ring Them Bells" where he describes a helicopter gunman in Iraq. The album was meant to protest the US' involvement in Iraq under George W. Bush, but it goes even further than just a simple Iraq War protest album. There is an extreme amount of detail to unpack in this LP, and I can't do it all here. Just trust me and throw this on when you have nothing else to do, and listen closely.
