THE GOOD AND THE BAD (Posted 2007-05-31 10:46:45 by ArchPaladin) Found some interesting news headlines today. The first was this story on CNN [ http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/05/31/shipwreck.treasure.ap/index.html ] [cnn.com] about a shipwreck and some contention over newly recovered gold coin. Seems a very timely news story, given the release of Pirates 3 (which I still haven't seen yet!). I had no idea they were still doing wreck recovery and finding treasure like this, but I guess in retrospect it seems obvious. I think it will be interesting to see how the story plays out, but I think we may not hear much of it in the news after this. Still very cool. Personally I'm siding with the explorers and not with Spain. The second article was significantly less cool. It concerns the recent missile tests in Russia [ http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/library/news/russia/2007/russia-070530-rferl01.htm ] [globalsecurity.org] and the arms race concerns that have been raised as a result. My initial thoughts are that we have too many opponents as it is - best not to re-add Russia to the list. I understand that US/Russia relations are rather strained at the moment, and while I hope this turns out to be a lot of political saber-rattling (as that's what I think it is), I would not want to go through another Cold War type era before we realize that and everything settles down. Having said that, I think that the decision by the US to put an antimissile shield so close to Russia was a little shortsighted - it makes the US look like it's trolling for conflict. I will be interested to see the next turn of events in this scenario. -------- There are no comments on this post.
