OLD NEWS? (Posted 2007-06-07 11:14:09 by ArchPaladin) Today, Amnesty International released a new report [ http://web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGAMR510932007 ] [amnesty.org] about the continued practice of secret imprisonment by the United States and the CIA. This report contains many names of those who are believed to be detained, and whose exact whereabouts have become uncertain because no information about those people are given once they are detained. I know this whole black-site ordeal came into and out of the American public's consciousness a long time ago. However, what was news to me in this report (and was apparently reported back in 2003 [ http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=%2Fnews%2F2003%2F03%2F09%2Fwalqa09.xml ] [telegraph.co.uk]), was that detention of individuals includes not only individuals who were suspected terrorists, but also their wives and young children. This I did not know, and I don't recall it being mentioned in any American news media either (you'll notice the Telegraph is British). Now I happen to be against detention in the manner we've gone about it, but all the more so when you're talking about young children. I wonder if the American public would have had a greater outcry if this had been widely known information at the time. Sadly, attempts to release info now would be rather late, and anyone trying to break this story has to complete with all the primary debates and such. I'm not even sure I know how best to act to this news myself, except to let anyone else who reads this know about it. I'm kinda hoping that everyone else already knew this and I was just left in the dark, but if that's the case then I would be sad that there wasn't a greater outcry about the whole issue. This is why I do my best to get my news and other information from obscure or international sites. There's a greater chance that I'll get less bias and more detail. -------- There are no comments on this post.
