STUFF (Posted 2010-08-09 18:09:05 by ArchPaladin) Today I came across The Story of Stuff [ http://www.storyofstuff.org/index.php ] [storyofstuff.org] It's an interesting 20-minute video on the nature of production, from extraction of resources all the way to disposal of consumer goods. The overall theme is how unsustainable this is, how it should be fixed, and that everyone should get involved to fix it. It's very source-material-light, so not a very good presentation to the highly skeptical or to those who have sharply contrasting political or economic viewpoints, but for those who are open to the ideas presented, it is a good watch and entertaining. Very neat animation too. Personally I wonder if a post-materialistic society will ever be realized, and if so, if a major upheaval is required to do it. Incidentally, the video talks briefly about dioxins [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polychlorinated_dibenzodioxins ] [wikipedia.org] - a very harmful chemical often caused by waste disposal. Reading up at the link I just gave, I found it very interesting that the major source of dioxin intake is meat intake. See this chart.
