============== | 2026-05-29 | ============== My manager told me he's leaving the team today. I have only been on the team for 2-3 months now. For the first 6 weeks I had no manager, as he was out on paternity leave. I am the senior engineer for the team, which meant most of his responsiblities fell to me. I am happy to fill this role, but the product I inhereted is in rough shape. It needs lots of urgent attention (it has active customers). As a result, I have been able to make little progress on mentoring and improving my team, on making larger improvments to our product, or in the persuit of my own personal goals. I was very much looking forward to the return of my manager so we could partner on the support load and technical direction of the team. It's been getting better since he got back, even if he hasn't been super present. Now he's leaving. Ugh. Our team needs more than I can deliver, at least with my own morale/energy as low as it is. I will focus on keeping the people supported and happy -- even if that means the product will have to suffer. We will get it into good shape eventually. But only if we have a team to do it.
