12 May 2026 =========== The 1st of may we did our first real day-trip of this year to the Edersee (perhaps known from its "Dambusters" fame). Junior is really a water-rat, while yes, the water was still cool, the bright sun and temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius made it quiet pleasant to go into the wet element. After that we ate at a little rustical restaurant... quiet a challenge with junior hungry and wound up, but it worked out unexpected well. The rest of the weekend was reserved for maintenance around the house where junior was eager to "help": Just imagine a super motivated a-bit-over-three-year-old bringing tools, helping to clean out weeds and so on. As long as we managed to direct his seemingly endless energy in a /somewhat/ useful (or at least non destructive) everything went well. We generally limit his screen time, if he watches shows its mostly stuff from the 80s with some exceptions. One of those is "Curious George", which in Germany is called "Coco der neugierige Affe". Its one of those cartoons which are interesting and educational for kids while at the same time unexpectedly easy to watch for adults. Its... serene... tone and calm, non hostile environment is surprising relaxing to watch. He also likes to watch "Loewenzahn" (i don't know if it was ever released in English) with its original host "Peter Lustig". Its a show i myself grew up with in the 80s and 90s. It did run a crazy long time in german TV with its original host and after his death even now is going strong with a worthy successor as host. Watching the old episodes really give a feel how much the world (especially in Germany) has changed since the late 70s to early 80s. E bike progress -------------- So far, i accumulated just a little bit under 1000 km in daily commutes with the bike and i am pretty satisfied. It just works. A thing that i had to try the hard way three times now is that it is absolutely rideable even with an empty battery (yeah, who would guess that taking bigger detours through the hilly countryside could drain the battery...). Using an old bicycle trolley i got from my sister helped reducing our car dependency a bit more. "AI" ---- At work i was somewhat "lured" / soft-forced /strongly suggested into using an code assistant for making some major changes on a project that i created some years ago and i took the opportunity to try out various coding agents. Well... lets just say the results where good in a scary way. I not only could vibecode the changes, i did a complete rework of the project, ended up creating it - just for fun - from scratch and simply followed my train of thoughts and prompted the things i would like to have in this software, prompted error corrections and let the LLM do all - and i mean all - coding. Looking into the Java Script code reveals that it is... fine. The scary thing is how good it is in deciphering what i write and converting this stuff written in natural language into working and quiet readable code. All in all its a far cry from the last time i dabbled into the LLM world. I think, all things considered, i will continue to use it at work - for now. Private computing ----------------- I still use the old laptop i set up last month, but changed a bit of the installed software shortly after my last post. I moved from Antix Linux to a minimal install of Devuan with the full suckless toolkit (dwm, st, dmenu) and since then i am using it for all of my daily needs happily. Using the modern web is always unpleasant - its just too damn slow to keep up with the bloat - but doable. I mostly stick to dillo for researching topics that needs to be investigated in the web, only falling back to Firefox when absolutely needed. For me, sticking to a simple desktop environment like dwm, doing nearly everything possible in the terminal and having a somewhat low-resolution display in a classical laptop form factor brings something... calming...into a world gone mad. While my wife loves her Chromebook and thinks i am entering something of a midlife-crisis i think i will stick to this setup for my private computing.
