January 26th, 2012:

     Last night, while drafting yesterday's phlog post, I came to the 
conclusion that I don't care much for Solaris 10... at least not on my Sun 
Ultra 5 workstation.

     I usually run Solaris 8 on the Ultra 5, as it is still rather easy to 
find pre-built packages for it.  I also use a SunPCI coprocessor (running 
Windows 2000) that only works under Solaris 8 out of the box.  My only 
real complaint is that Solaris ships with an outdated browser (Netscape 
4.x), but that is easily rectified.

     I decided to try the latest version of Solaris 10 out, largely as a 
curiosity.  Sure, it works and is rock-stable, but it runs slower than 
frozen shit on the Ultra 5's 440MHz processor.  I suspect a return to 
Solaris 8 is imminent...
