July 19th, 2012: As luck would have it, I was able to spend time both with my wife and in the lab, though not simultaneously. The missus was a bit tired after a long day at work, so she opted to have a nap. After taking a quick catnap with her, I headed downstairs to the lab to try my luck at installing Windows 2000 on the SunPCi-II. Unfortunately, my Win2k CD was nowhere to be found, and, not wanting to waste precious lab time, opted for Windows 98SE instead. The install went smoothly, but I still can't get the SunPCi's NIC to connect to anything, even with "virtual networking" disabled. After a bit of rummaging, I found the driver disk for my cheap Chinese USB-to-Ethernet dongle and managed to connect that way. The first order of business was to download the last compatible Firefox (2.0.0.20.etc), the Overbite Gopher addon, and PuTTY. Didn't have a chance to configure anything, but I'm hoping to find the time tonight. While rummaging around for the aforementioned driver disk, I found my Windows 2000 CD, so if I can find the time, I'll try installing and tweaking that as well. At this point, a concern comes to mind. With two fully-loaded versions of Windows (three if I buy a new copy of XP Pro), I may spend less and less time with Solaris 10. Old habits die hard, and I'm afraid Windows may distract me from my original goal, which was to learn system administration, networking, and to teach myself to program again. Of course, I could always try to get Solaris 10 (x86) going via VMWare on Windows XP on the SunPCi-II...
