The Backroad To Civilization March 15th, 2014: Much to my chagrin, I've been ignoring the "phlog" portion of my gophersite in favour of the 'diaries. I really ought to pay more attention to this section... That should be easy, as I've killed off several of my blogs and other websites in the past few months, owing to lack of interest. Fatherhood takes up a lot of my time, and free time is at a premium. We're also packing up everything and putting it into storage, as we fix up the house in order to sell it. This of course leaves me with absolutely NO time to work on my various computer projects, which is alright as it forces me to look at the viability of each project. Some things I was doing out of sheer stubbornness (such as using a Mac LC475 as my main internet machine), other things I was doing to wring every ounce of performance out of a favourite machine (my Sun Ultra 5 workstation), and others I was using to learn about networking older machines using older protocols (my Tadpole/RDI Voyager-II uucp/ftp/gopher server). I'm going to be going through my equipment this month, to figure out what I'm keeping, and what I'm selling or throwing away. Too much stuff, and I don't want to have to move it all. If I *do* end up selling anything, I'll post something in the appropriate newsgroup, here, or on eBay.
